Five cops injured in scuffle at Indo-Myanmar border

Pothashang News Service: Imphal, March 14, 2020: Five cops were injured in a scuffle with civilians at Indo-Myanmar border town Moreh in Tengnoupal district of Manipur on Friday.
The scuffle took place over stopping a car by a police commando team who were on duty in connection with sealing of the international border.

The Indo-Myanmar border has been sealed in view of possible threat of transmission of COVID-19 following an order issued by the state home department on Monday.

In pursuance of the order of the Manipur home department regarding the sealing of border gates and porous borders along Indo-Myanmar International border, a team of Moreh police commando was detailed for intercepting any illegal activities along the border near Shijang village. At around 11:00 am, the detailed CDO team tried to stop one Maruti Swift Dzire bearing registration number WB02AF3805 having tinted glass coming from Holenphai village side. Instead of cooperating with the police team on duty, they drove away the vehicle. The police team chased the vehicle. There were two occupants in the vehicle. Instead of giving cooperation to the officer on duty, they started attacking the team commander asking why they were stopping the vehicle and made a scuffle. The two civilians were identified as Mangminlen Touthang and Khaijamang Touthang, both sons of late Ngamjapao Touthang Leijangphai village, near Moreh. They tried to snatch the weapon of the cop driver. In the scuffle, four commando personnel got injured, said a press statement released by Manipur Police on Saturday.
More civilians started gathering at the spot and the police team left the spot.

The police personnel were injured with bleeding and rushed to Moreh Hospital for treatment. At the same time, around 150 to 200 persons suspected to be from Holenphai and Shijang village, Moreh came at Moreh Hospital. They began to attack the police teams with an intention to kill by using lethal weapons like iron rods, sticks, stones, etc, the release said.

The mob broke the police vehicle and some glass window panes of the hospital. The mob also kept the commando personnel confined inside a room in the hospital. In order to rescue the commando team confined at the hospital, a team of Tengnoupal police led rushed to the Moreh Hospital. The police team requested the mob to disperse which was of no use. They still held captive the four personnel inside a room in the hospital. Then, another team of reinforcement led by Th. Vikramjit Singh, Tengnoupal SP arrived at Moreh Hospital. The combined team rescued the four personnel who were held captive by the mob in the hospital room, it added.

The mob became more and more wild and formed an unruly crowd and three sticks and pelted stones to the police. In that, one police personnel got inured being hit by stones pelted on the head. The window panes of the vehicle of ADC Moreh were also destroyed by stones pelted by the mob. Hence, there was no other option other than to disperse the unruly crowd by using minimum force. So, some tear smoke shells were fired and dispersed the crowd with the permission of the Executive Magistrate

The police department has warned the accused persons who were involved in the cases and who took part in the destruction of government vehicle and other government properties and who attacked the police personnel on duty to surrender before the police at the earliest.
Chief minister N. Biren Singh said rule of low will prevail in the state.
