Imphal: Since the nation came to a 21-day lockdown due to COVID-19, various fake news are circulating on many social media platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp, etc. On Monday, a voice message regarding 3 months free electricity is going viral on WhatsApp in Manipur.
The message said that to get free electricity for 3 months one need to follow some steps for activation. One has to type *00000000009# two times to activate the 3 months free electricity subscription, it said.
However, the said key is for switching ON and OFF for the electric meter only and there is no such relief package announced by government. The union government on 28th March had announced for a three month moratorium on state owned electricity distribution companies (discoms) to make payments for the electricity bought by them.
The power ministry said the measures including waiving penalty for late payments, were part of the government’s efforts to ensure round-the-clock electricity supply during the three week long nationwide lockdown to prevent the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
