Government will take actions against betel leaves transporters – CM

Pothashang News Service: Imphal, April 6, 2020: Chief Minister N. Biran Singh said that at least 53 (Fifty Three) bundles of betel leaves were seized and government will take up legal actions against those who had transported it. In a video messages clarifying about the hue and cry on airlifting of betel leaves in the state, he said, betel leaves is not an illegal item and government cannot initiate against those who had airlifted it.

However, considering the present situation of lockdown due to COVID-19 state government does not entertain such act. The state is under curfew and transportation of such non-essential items is not permitted. Therefore, 53 bundles of consignments which were transported from Imphal airport were seized by Singjamei PS for breaking curfew and not having necessary permits from concern DCs, he added.

He said, government has taken up stringent measures to keep an eye on the remaining consignments being held up at Imphal airport. A surveillance team has also been deputed to keep vigil on the police personnel who are posted at the airport and urged people of Manipur to support and trust the government. He added that the government will not compromise anything which is against the rule of law and any update on the issue will be informed to the public through media.
Expressing anguish over people for not maintain social distancing norms while buying essentials commodities, medicines etc, CM reiterated to main social distancing and appealed again to stay at home to stop the spread of COVID-19.
