Patriots’ Day at New Delhi

Delhi Manipuri Society (DeMaS) observed the Patriots’ Day at New Delhi, today. The members paid floral tributes to the martyrs in commemoration of the sacrifices they rendered for defending the sovereignty of Manipur.

The Patriots Day is observed on the day of hanging of two iconic leaders — Yubraj Bir Tikendrajit and Thangal General, in public on 13th August, 1891 at Pheidabung, which is presently at the heart of Imphal city, for defending against the aggression of the British imperialists. They laid their lives to protect the sovereignty of the land. Chirai Naga, Niranjan Subedar and Puldrambam Kajao were also hanged in jail.

The day is observed to honour not only the sacrifice these five people but also to pay homage to all other martyrs and those who were exiled to Kala Pani for standing against the British to protect the then Kingdom. This day is an occasion not only to remember the sacrifice of the known and unknown patriots but also to instil ourselves the sense of patriotism, selfless service to the people and strong sense of oneness among all the Manipuris.
