COMMERCE AND INDUSTRY TO INITIATE MAKING HANDLOOM PRODUCTS AS UNIFORMS FROM NEXT SESSION: BISWAJIT

Imphal, 29th August, 2017 (DIPR): Commerce and Industry/ Handloom and Textiles Minister Shri Thongam Biswajit Singh said that after the upcoming Panchayat Election, the Commerce and Industry department will take the initiative to table the introduction of handloom products as uniforms of government educational institutions in the State from next academic session before the State cabinet.

Minister Shri Biswajit said introduction of State handloom products as school uniforms will not only help the State weavers but will also help the State economy. He was speaking at the Foundation Day and Grand Opening of the Show Room for Handloom Readymade Garments at Imphal Handloom Building, Kongba Makha Nandeibam Leikai (Moriba North), Imphal East today.

Encouraging entrepreneurs to open more such outlets in the State, the Minister said the entrepreneurs by opening these outlets help in employment generation.

Minister Shri Biswajit said that several ethnic groups who have their own traditions and customs inhabit the State. Every ethnic group has the right to preserve and promote their own handloom products, he said adding that our handloom products are unique from others and that the State has maximum number of weavers.

Shri Biswajit also explained the importance of solar power looms and said using the solar power looms will save both time and energy and at the same time increase production and profit. He said that the Ministry of Micro Small and Medium Enterprises has promised 4000 solar looms for the State and in the first phase 500 such looms will arrive in the State soon.

Touching upon the issue of mineral exploration in the State, Minister Biswajit said the government is not providing the State’s own resources to outsiders, but only trying to set up industries and factories so as to strengthen the State’s economy and help the people get employment.

Observing that awareness of the various schemes implemented by the government seems to be little among the public, Minister Shri Biswajit also expressed that the government will disseminate awareness regarding government schemes to the public through Information and Public Relations under the Information Education and Communication Fund.

As part of the foundation day celebration, Minister Shri Biswajit also launched the website of the Imphal Handloom (www.imphalhandloom.in).

Handloom and Textiles Director Shri K.Lamlee Kamei and All Manipur Entrepreneurs Association, AMEA president Shri S.Rishikumar Singh attended the function as president and guest of honour respectively. Locals and weavers of the area also attended the function.
