State ready for steps to win ST status

Imphal, October 2: The Manipur government is ready to take up appropriate steps following recommendations by Manipur State Commission for Scheduled Tribe after relevant studies and examinations, said a press statement released today by the state government.

The press release stated that the Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee of Manipur (STDCM) has been demanding for inclusion of the ethnic Meitei/Meetei Community in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) list since December, 2012.

The STDCM has submitted memorandum in this regard to the Government of Manipur and also the Government of India. In reply to a representation of the Committee on May 3, 2013 submitted to Government of India, the Ministry of Tribal Affairs of the Government of India had sought specific recommendations in this regard along with the latest socio-economic survey and ethnographic report by an organization of repute so that the proposal for inclusion of Meitei/Meetei Community in the Scheduled Tribes list of Manipur could be considered added the statement.

On receipt of the Government of India Communication, the State Government of Manipur has requested the Manipur State Commission for ST on September 19, 2017 to examine the matter and make appropriate recommendations. The Commission is a statutory body set up on 27″ March 2014 under the Manipur State Commission for the Scheduled Tribes Act, 2014. As provided under Section 3(2) of the Act, the State Government has already constituted the ‘Manipur State Commission for Scheduled Tribes’ on 8th August 2016 with R.H. Gonmei, IAS (Retd.) as Chairman and Dr. Simpson Sareo and Dr. John H. Pulamte respectively as Members.

Since, the Central Government has sought socio-economic survey and ethnographic report by an organization of repute, Manipur State Commission for Scheduled Tribe would be examining the matter from the relevant angle to conduct the studies and submit the recommendation, said the statement.

The State Government will take appropriate action as soon as the report is received from Commission, said the statement.
