Water levels in rivers rise up; flood in Imphal

Imphal, October 22: Heavy rainfall has brought the water levels in Imphal and Nambul rivers, which has created fear of collapse of river banks nearby dwelling areas in Imphal, specially at Singjamei Tekhao Sapam Leikai.

Locals of Singjamei today repaired the breached bank of the Imphal river at Singjamei Tekhao Sapam Leikai pat road. This river has breached its bank in the area a week ago and the situation has been worsened as the water level rose following incessant rain. The bank collapsed further due to the incessant rain which lashed the state since last afternoon.

Residents of the locality came out and repair the river bank using bamboos, earth and other available items to block the water. Manipur assembly speaker and Singjamei MLA, Y. Khemchand’s better half, Joybala Yumnam also visited the site and as speaker is out of town.

According to the Singjamei residents the road was collapsed since last week. The absence of retaining wall and good road has caused a lot of inconveniences to the people. They lamented as no actions have been so far taken up despite repeated requests to the concerned authority.

Water has started flooding at residential areas in some parts of Uripok and Saolbandh with the water level rising in Nambul river. The road along over bridge foot at Uripok has been flooded. Sega road at Takhel Leikai of Sagolbandh has also been flooded.
