NIA ARRESTS KYKL CADRE ACCUSED OF 2015 CHANDEL AMBUSH THAT KILLED 18 SOLDIERS

Imphal, January 13, 2018: National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Friday arrested one KYKL cadre who was involved in the Chandel ambush on army personnel of 6th Dogra Regiment Battalion on June 4, 2015 that killed 18 soldiers.

The accused arrested was Naorem Premkumar Singh, a resident of Kakching Irum Mapan village of Kakching. He carried a cash reward of Rs. 2 lakh on his head. He was arrested in a joint operation by the NIA and Manipur Police. A pistol and five live rounds have also been recovered from his possession, said a press release by NIA. He had been absconding since the ambush took place in Manipur in 2015.

The ambush took place while 46 soldiers of the 6 Dogra Regiment were travelling in a convoy of four trucks from their Moltuk base in Chandel district to the regiment headquarter in Dimapur. The ambush took place between Paraolol and Larong along the New Samtal Road, about 125 km from Imphal and15 km from the India-Myanmar border.

The special NIA court in Imphal had issued a non-bailable arrest warrant and has announced Premkumar a proclaimed offender.

Premkumar is the second person so far arrested in connection with the ambush. Within three weeks of the ambush the NIA had arrested Khumlo Abi, regional chairman of NSCN-K.

The NIA had on December 19, 2015, chargesheeted Naorem Premkanta Singh and Khumlo Abi Anal, and named 32 persons others, of whom two KYKL cadres, Rajalung Kamei and Keishak Rajen Singh were killed in an ambush.

The 32 persons included 14 cadres of the KYKL, five of the NSCN-K, three of the Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP), and one of the Kamatapur Liberation Organisation (KLO).Prominent among those mentioned in the chargesheet included NSCN(K) chairman SS Khaplang, KYKL chairman Namoijam Okendra Singh and KCP president Kshetrimayum Noyon Singh, says reports.
