Meal workers demand monthly wage of Rs. 18, 000

Imphal, January 17, 2018 :Midday Meal scheme workers in Manipur spearheaded by the All Manipur Midday Meal Workers ‘Union, an affiliated union of Centre of Indian Trade Unions , CITU organised a protest rally at Directorate of Education (S) , Lamphelpat, Imphal as a part of 1-Day nation-wide strike of scheme workers on Wednesday.

After the strike the director Kiran of the education (S) department invited the leaders of the workers union to meet him at his office chamber. A team of 5 members including Maisnam Loitang Devi (President), M . Jamuna Devi(Vice- President), H. Tekendra Sharma (General Secretary),K. Gaijanglung and Serajan Begum discussed with the director on the various issues concerning the scheme workers particularly of the midday meal workers and submitted a memorandum to reach the chief minister.

The memorandum submitted included demands—recognition of the workers and corresponding rights; coverage EPF and ESI to the scheme workers as social security including monthly pension not less than Rs. 3000, minimum wage not less than Rs, 18,000 per month; non privatization of the scheme; adequate financial allocation in the Union Budget 2018-19 for the centrally sponsored schemes to ensure an increase in the wages and universalisation of the schemes with adequate infrastructure and quality services; and to provide maternity benefit to the workers. .

It also demanded adequate allocation of the state share in the coming state budget 2018-19 to ensure that the scheme workers are paid at par with the other state schemes and regular payment of honorarium to the scheme workers and the clearance of all due honorarium to them.

The director assured the delegation that the government will look after the issues and their honorarium may be disbursed within a weak.
