Measures to improve inmate’s reformation and quality of live continues: Kunjakeshor


Imphal, the 13th March, 2018 (DIPR): As measures to improve the inmate’s quality of life and reformation, Manipur Jail Department has taken up and continues various measures so as to enable the prisoners to come back to normal life after their release from Jail, told Superintendent of Police, Manipur Central Jail, Imphal Shri A. Kunjakeshor Singh today in the Series of Press Conference, organised by DIPR at its official premises Moirangkhom, Imphal.

SP Manipur Central Jail Imphal added that Yoga programme under the Art of Living Society, Manipur Chapter are conducted to Manipur Central Jail, Imphal and Manipur Central Jail, Sajiwa. The male prisoners now lodged in Sajiwa Jail are taught the art of making of Plastic bags and Plastic morah (sitting stools) for earning their livelihood with the skills after their release from jail and female inmates lodged in Manipur Central Jail, Imphal are imparted tailoring and embroidery training by rotation under the supervision of well experienced Instructors sponsored by the Social Welfare Department, Government of Manipur. Moreover, at the time of releasing the inmate who has completed tailoring and embroidery training course, the Department of Social welfare provides one machine to the trainee free of cost. The method of making dhoop, dolls and making of dish washing detergent powder and liquid is also imparted to the female inmates so that they can earn livelihood after their release from jail. Inmates who are working in vocational section get 40 % of the profit of the sells items as their wage too.

There is Painting section for the prisoners of Manipur Central Jail, Sajiwa. Some painted postures were shown in the 33rd Asian Pacific Conference on Correctional Administration at New Delhi in 2013. Music room having musical instruments such as harmonium, Bongo drums, Flute, Guitars, etc. are providing to the prisoners for their entertainment.

In the Gym of Manipur Central Jail, Sajiwa about 180 prisoners worked out turn by turn everyday. In connection with this, bodybuilding equipments were donated by Animal Gym for the prisoners particularly for the prisoners of Manipur Central Jail, Sajiwa. The Gym is regularly improved by the Department. The Gym provides physical fitness and recreation to the inmates, Shri A. Kunjakeshor furthered.

With the aim to make inmates to read and write, Basic Education is being carried out by the teacher of Jail Department. The student prisoners are allowed to appear various examinations including HSLC, PUC (10+2) and IGNOU examinations inside the Manipur Central Jail, Sajiwa. Free Legal assistance is also proving to the prisoners. Newly admitted prisoners have given Counselling about the crimes committed by them and rule and regulations of the jail administration inside the jail also brief them before entering jail, Shri A. Kunjakeshor Singh stated.

In today’s series of press conference, Additional Superintendent of Police, Manipur Central Jail, Imphal Shri S. Touthang was also present and Joint Director, Smt. W. Phajatombi Devi was the moderator.

It may be mentioned that the Jail Department is one of the oldest institutions and functioning even now from the same location. The present capacity and prisoner’s population of the two functioning Jails i.e. Manipur Central Jail, Imphal and Manipur Central Jail, Sajiwa is 1095 (capacity) and 774 (prisoner’s population).
