Imphal, the 14th March, 2018 (DIPR): With the establishment of Department of Language Planning and Implementation on 4th September 2013, the Department is trying to resolve all language issues in the State.
In today’s Series of Press Conference, organised by DIPR in its office complex at Moirangkhom Imphal, Director Language Planning and Implementation Dr. L. Mahabir Singh told that Meetei Mayek has been adopted by the Government as the only Script for Manipuri Language in place of Bengali script and introduced it in all schools of the State from Class I and II from the academic year 2006 onwards. The system upgrades yearly upto B.A. level (MIL, Elective, Honours & Pass Course). Transliteration of all available Manipuri Textbooks and Reference Book from Bengali script into Meetei Mayek has been done by the Department and also uploaded at Departmental website dlpimanipur.gov.in. School and College teachers teaching Manipuri language are giving Meetei Mayek training.
Moreover, Preparation and Standardization of Manipuri Terminologies for 16 (sixteen) subjects has been completed by engaging competent and concerned Manipuri subject experts. The Department is going to produce a Standard Manipuri Learner’s Dictionary. The Dictionary, through Manipuri, will help in learning English Language which is used throughout the world for international communication.
With a view to honour Manipuri writers in recognition of their contributions to Manipuri literature, ‘Manipuri State Award for Literature’ has been given every year since 2008. The Award is being given to the author of the most outstanding book, first published during the last five years, the Director added.
For the development of the 18 Major Tribal Languages of the State (Thadou-Kuki, Tangkhul, Rongmei, Vaiphei, Zou, Hmar, Kom, Mizo, paite, Mao, Liangmei, Gangte, Poumei, Maring, Simte, Anal, Maram and Zeme), an amount not exceeding to Rs. 6,00,000/-only is also accorded Administrative Approval and Expenditure Sanction for granting Financial Assistance during the Financial Year 2017-18. Preparation and production of Comprehensive Grammar, Teaching and learning materials for various purposes and comparative vocabularies/ lexicon of all Major Tribal Languages along with Manipuri, Hindi and English are also going on. Documentation and Conservation of Endangered Tribal Languages are being taken up well, Dr. L. Mahabir Singh furthered.
