Teachers clarifies over student harassing allegation


Pothashang News Service: Imphal, May 31, 2018: Teachers of Millenium Institute of Sciences, a higher secondary school in Imphal has clarified against the allegation for beating a class XII student of the school on May 25.

Somenta Pangamba, father of the student Sanajaoba Pangamba alleged that his son was beaten badly by his school teachers for which he is given medical care at Jawaharlal Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), Imphal. The father said on that day before the class begin Sanajaoba was adjusting his pant when a teacher Meisna Ranjan approached him. He did not see the teacher. The teacher slapped him and threatened for disrespecting the teacher and the boy asked for forgiveness. The teacher dragged him down the stairs. Another teacher came and scolded grabbing his neck tie for not wearing it properly, added the father.

A third teacher also made him squat as punishment. The father said the teachers had threatened him not to send his son to school again.

On May 27 he complained the Police and a student body. The police took the statements of both sides. An FIR was lodged at Lamphel Police.

“We want proper legal action against the teachers” said the father who is a swimming coach.

He said his son is being counselled by a psychiatric doctor Dr. Shantibala of JNIMS

The teachers headed by the school’s vice-principal Moirangthem Binod Meitei on Thursday made their clarification that they have done nothing serious to hurt the boy. They were trying to correct the manner of the boy, the teachers said.

He said the allegation made to the teachers by the student and the father is wrong. Ranjan (maths teacher) said when we checked for dress irregularities of the students this boy was found sitting on a table with his legs wide spread. “I told Sanajaoba to leave the table and stand properly. The tall boy stares at me; grabbed my neck and shook me. Then I hit him twice with a stick to bring down his temper. Nothing more serious was done to him”, said Ranjan.

The vice-principal said we called his father and talked about his behaviour and discussed to work together to change the boy’s attitude. “However in the evening on the next day he rang me up and threatened the school teachers”, he added. As he complained the police we were summoned twice at the police station in Imphal. We said sorry for thrashing him with stick.

“The issue could have been settled between the family and the school authority, what is the need of complaining to the police if the parents and teachers are ready to change the boy”, he added.

The teachers said that the school had never expelled any student from the school for misbehaving or for not following the school’s rule. Our motto is to make students wise and good in all aspect like second parents to them.

“We have not expelled him during his class XI year even though he attended school only about 40 days. His parents had also requested that the boy has health problem. So on health ground he was permitted to appear exam. The class for this year started on April 26 and he attended the school for just four days and we have cautioned for this”, said the vice principal.

The parents did not send him to school even if we asked after the incident. He will not be expelled. We don’t want to see our students spoiled, he added.

The Youth Guidance Club of Kongba Kshetrikeikai has also condemned the act of the teachers towards their student. It urges the authority to take against the teachers.
