State team to meet HRD minister over varsity issue

Pothashang News Service: Imphal, July 12, 2018: Chief Minister Biren Singh said a team of the state government led by him would meet Union human resources development minister Prakash Javadekar to apprise him about the present situation of the varsity tomorrow.
He was talking to reporters at his secretariat today.
Biren said that taking the present unrest at the varsity seriously, the state government has been making all possible efforts including meeting with the representatives of MUTA and MUSU and explaining the stand of the Manipur University community to the Union Human Resources Development Minister.
Stating that there is no question of taking the issue lightly by the state government, he said that the state cabinet had held meetings on many occasions to discuss the matter.
Biren said as Manipur University is a central institution, the state government can’t intervene into its affairs. However, taking serious note of the academic career of the students of the state, the state government has been trying to explore all possible means to resolve the issue, he added.
Biren said, the Union HRD minister deputed a Joint Secretary to take stock of the situation. The Chief Minister further said that he had told MUTA representatives that he is willing to request the Union HRD Minister to relieve the present VC of his duties till the completion of an enquiry regarding the allegations levelled against him.
The chief minister said the present VC can be penalised or sacked if the allegations are proven.
