General strike hits Imphal life

Pothashang News Service: Imphal, July 14, 2018: Twenty-four hours Socialist Students’ Union Manipur (SSUM), Proletarian Feminist Movement Manipur (PoFAM) and Socialist Women Association (SWA) has paralysed Imphal and other parts of the state.
The general strike was imposed demanding for proper investigation over ‘border encroachment’ by Myanmar along with three other demands, has crippled life in Manipur.
The organisations demand the government to produce publicly the draft bill to safeguard indigenous people of Manipur before it is produced in the state assembly session.
They demand justice for weight-lifter Sanjita Chanu. They say the serial number for conducting doping test for Sajita is different from the serial number of the doping test result.
It is also demanded to let the people know where have the teachers, who are about 20, 000, posted. The organisations complain that there are fewer teachers in remote areas while teachers congest in city schools.
The organisations accuse both the state and Central government for giving away Manipur’s land to Myanmar continually. They say border pillars along the Indo-Myanmar borders have been shifted towards Manipur’s territory with the knowledge of the governments and people of Manipur cannot accept it.
The general strike has largely affected markets in Imphal city and other towns. Connectivity between Imphal and other districts were cut off.
Schools and colleges were closed. Government offices have been largely affected due to the general strike.
