Cell Internet services suspended


Pothashang News Service: Imphal, July 21, 2018: All the telecom services except the voice call are temporarily abandoned for five days in Manipur with effect from Friday morning to prevent anti-national and anti-social message on social media.

BSNL broad band service has been the only option for internet service in the state.

Ksh, Rakhumani of Home department in press statement stated that the prohibition is imposed under Rule II of central suspension of telecom services of public emergency for public safety rule 2017.

Social media has become a handy tool for rumour mongers. It has become necessary to take up this prohibition measure in order to maintain law and order in public interest by stopping spread of misinformation and rumours in social media, said the release.

It stated that all mobile service providers have been directed to ensure cooperation with the order. However broadband internet service will be back in the service shortly as it was not included in the banning.

It is like imposing emergency in the state. It affects our right of communication. Today communication includes transaction as well. This ban affects the economy and development in the state. With the help of Internet we communicate not only within the state and nation, but globally as well,” said professor Amar Yumnam.

“Banning internet services is a sign of failure of governance,” the professor said.

There has been complains from youth who does not have BSNL broad band connection for taking away their service provider business. Students too complain as they fail to access to internet for study references.
