Village defenders mutiny over pay scale


Pothashang News Service: Imphal, July 28, 2018: About 4, 000 strong Village Defence Force (VDF) volunteers today took out a silent rally attempting to reach the chief minister’s bungalow to press on the demand to hike their remuneration.

The VDF personnel gathered near Imphal International Airport and set off the rally. Besides pay hike the security volunteers have also been demanding to give appropriate monthly honorarium from time to time, to give security service and to give thirteen months pay.

When the rally reach along Tiddim ground the demonstrators confronted with police who tried to intervene them. VDF personnel broke through the police and tried to reach chief minister bungalow.

Police fired tear gas shells, rubber bullets and mock bomb towards VDF personnel when they reached Kwakeithel bazaar. VDF personnel also pelted stones towards police personnel. During the confrontation the agitators snatched one service gun with two loaded magazine including a police radio set from the police.

The rally was blocked at Kwakeithel Bazaar. Police selected ten VDF representatives to meet DGP, L.M. Khaute.

The service gun with loaded magazine including the radio set was returned to the police.

At least twelve VDF personnel and one police personnel were injured. A police vehicle was also damaged.
