Pothashang News Service: Imphal, August 3, 2018: Students’ wing of Joint Committee on Inner Line Permit System (JCILPS) has today announced to start verifying illegal migrants entering Manipur following NRC draft publication in Assam.
The students’ wing during a media interaction held at its office said it will start checking against illegal migrants from tomorrow.
Manjit Sarangthem, convenor of Students’ wing of JCILPS said the publication of NRC draft in Assam on July 30 has created fear on the neighbouring state of Assam. The about 40 thousand strong people who are not included in the draft may attempt to enter in the north east states. He said that in order to prevent from illegal migrants entering Manipur we have prepared to start checking along the national highways.
We have coordinated with the student groups in different parts of the state. A joint task force of 20 members will operate check posts in two teams along Imphal-Dimapur and Imphal-Jiribam highways, said Manjit.
We will take up screening and verification for 15 days. We also believe that Manipur government will play an active role in this regard, he added.
The students’ wing also urged Manipur government to strengthen its steps for the same. We have heard that the state government has sent back about 300 people who tried to cross into the state. As information of entering more migrants the degree of our expectation to the government is condensed. Hence we have decided to launch screening of migrants entering Manipur, he added.
