Students confronts police on Imphal city streets

Pothashang News Service: Imphal, September 25, 2018: College and school students today faced tear gas and mock bomb when police tried to disperse while agitating at different parts of Imphal.

The students’ demonstrations were taken in solidarity to the demand for withdrawal of security forces deployed inside the Manipur University and release of varsity students and teachers who were arrested following the midnight police action inside the varsity.

Police fired mock bombs at DM College road when the students demonstrated along the city street. Students of TG Girls Higher Secondary and CC Higher Secondary schools took protest nearby their school. Police could manage to cool down the agitating girls of TG girls. However the police fired tear gas shells to disperse the CC school students.

On the same demand the girl hostellers of the varsity launched indefinite hunger strike at their hostel entrances. They said they will not retreat until the demands are fulfilled.

The varsity community opposed against professor K. Yugindro for taking the office of vice-chancellor as pro vice-chancellor following the order served by suspended vice-chancellor Adya Prasad Pandey during his forced leave.

HRD ministry served forced leave to him to conduct enquiry on the allegations made against him of administrative and financial irregularities.

The varsity community claims that the stalemate of the varsity following the shutdown strike came to an end after 85 days with the beginning of enquiry on August 23. Since then under the leadership of the vice-chancellor in-charge professor W. Vishwanath pending exams’ results of the graduate students were declared and began post graduate exams. “However the exam has been cancelled with the fresh disturbance made by professor Yugindro,” said a group varsity scholars and post graduate students.

They alleged that joining of Yugindro as pro vice-chancellor would be an attempt to divert the issue of demanding ouster of Pandey.
