Forest officials rescue a Felis Bengalansis cat

Pothashang News Service: Imphal, October 7, 2018: A team of forest department today rescued a Felis Bengalensis, a leopard cat, locally known as Keijenglang from Sora Mamang Leikai, Kakching.

Felis Bengalensis is recognised as an endangered species by the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, schedule 1.

The animal of the cat family was found captured by one Md. Tamijur Rehman a resident of Sora Mamang Leikai. Staffs of Kakching Range office with W. Ramchandra Singh, honorary wildlife warden of Thoubal rescued the animal.

It was handed over to Manipur Zoological Garden.

Range forest officer, Kakching, N. Munal Meitei said the cat species which was once abundantly available has today become a rare species and the forest department is trying to save the animal from extinction.

He said it is feared that endangered animals like this will be vanished as some people continue to kill wild animals for their own interest. If hunting continues as way of life in hill forests against wildlife protection laws rare species in Manipur will extinct one day, he added.

Munal appealed all to stop hunting animals as law prohibits. He also appealed the deputy commissioners to stop providing gun license to kill animals except for some unavoidable circumstances.

The forest officer said following drive against netting of birds at wetland areas in Kakching district the rate of netting birds has considerably reduced.

However Kakching range seized two bird catching nets from Sora village yesterday, he added.

“Offenders who are caught for netting birds will be either send to jail for three years or fine a sum of Rs 25,000 or both as per the Wildlife Protection Act,” cautioned Munal.
