Manipur University community condemns “inhuman treatment” to professors

Pothashang News Service: Imphal, October 13, 2018: The Joint Action Committee of the Manipur University Community comprising of Manipur University Students’ Union, Manipur University Teachers’ Association and Manipur University staffs’ Association has condemned for ‘inhuman treatment’ to professors who are in jail.
The varsity community on Sunday held an emergency meeting with the teachers’ association’s president Professor I. Tomba Singh in the chair.
It resolved to condemn in strongest terms the inhuman and insulting treatment of members of the University Community currently lodged in jail on false charges and even taking them to hospital with their hands cuffed as if they are hard-core criminals.
The members expressed extreme shock and anguish on the information that the professors of the university, who are in the jail now, were taken to the hospital for medical attention with their hands cuffed, said a press statement released by the varsity community.
While the veracity of the grounds of the FIR are under active social criticism in addition to the admission of Prof K. Yugindro Singh himself of his complaints as false charges, the members expressed criticism of the inhumanity with which the University Faculty were being taken to hospital for medical treatment with their hands locked with hand-cuffs, said the statement.
The six teachers and nine students of the university were arrested following a police raid on the varsity campus on the midnight of September 20.
All the Members emphasised the urgency and imperative to issue a public statement condemning such inhuman treatment of Teachers as hard-core criminals, said the varsity community.
