First North East Olympic Games underway

Pothashang News Service: Imphal, October 24, 2018: First North East Olympic Games was kicked off today at Main Stadium Khuman Lampak Sports Complex, Imphal, organised by Manipur Olympic Association.
Declaring the games open chief minister said the North East India has a distinct identity with similar culture and features. We as a region have not been able to cohesively integrate emotionally, socially or economically. It has been a long cherished dream of the region to create a platform to bring peace and friendship through sports, he added. He mentioned that a lot needs to be done to optimally utilise and unlock the full potential of the talents in the region.
Various sportspersons from Manipur and other North East states has made various achievements in the regional, national and international arena. Sports have become an increasingly aspirational career option and presents tremendous potential for the young and talented in the region. The NorthEast Olympic Games will provide valuable exposure and experience to young participants and inspire future sportspersons, said the chief minister.
He appealed the people of the state to show our best hospitality and rich tradition and culture to the sportspersons who had come for the Games.
Education minister Th. Radheshyam said it is the humble beginning of the Manipur Olympic Association to offer a common platform to come together, embarking upon a new journey to show path of peace and harmony through the spirit of games and sports. The North East Olympic Games will be a grooming ground for the young talents of the region, he added.
Chief Minister took salute of march past of 8 teams during the function.
Around 2000 sportspersons including officials from eight north eastern states are competing in 12 sports disciplines during the 5-day fames.
Minister for youth affairs and sports Letpao Haokip, health and family welfare minister L. Jayantakumar Singh, Arunachal Pradesh minister for sports and youth affairs Dr. Mohesh Chal and others attended the function.
