State honours Mc Mary Kom with “MEETHOILEIMA” title

Imphal, December 11, 2018 (DIPR): State honours the Gold Medallist of the recently held AIBA World Women Boxing Championship, 2018 New Delhi, Smt. MC Mary Kom with the title “Meethoileima” in a felicitation function today at Khuman Lampak Sports Complex today.
On the occasion, Chief Minister Shri N. Biren Singh who was the Chief Guest of the function announced the title “Meethoileima” and handed over a cheque of Rs. 10,00,000/- ( Rupees ten lakhs) to her. She was also adorned with the attires particularly worn by a queen/ maharani including Head gear (kajengjei), wrapper (phanek mapan naibi), belt (khwangchet) and chadar (apaba inna-phi) as a mark of highest woman. While honouring her, all the crowds who were present in that felicitation function gave standing ovation to the Gold medallist. He also declared that the Imphal West DC Road towards Game Village will be named as MC Mary Kom Road.
Shri Biren said that the titles and costumes were not related with any community of the State. It is purely in honour of Smt. Mary Kom’s outstanding achievement in boxing. The Government talked and consulted with intellectuals before taking the cabinet decision on ‘Meethoileima’ title and the attires. The idea is based on an ‘angamba-angambi’ coming back after conquering a war and people’s honour to the achiever.
Chief Guest stated that it is our pride to have Mary Kom as a daughter of our State, Manipur. Today, world knows her so well, no more words require to introduce her. People of Manipur will continue to shower their love and care for Mary Kom in her effort for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, he added. The Chief Minister also advised sports players for keeping discipline and to do extra practice while trying to achieve something in their life.
Shri Biren appreciated Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi for nominating Smt. Mary Kom as member of Rajya Sabha and for choosing Manipur to establish the lone Sports University in the country.
Speaking as functional President, Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Shri Letpao Haokip told that all the people of Manipur support her. Our support was to the extent that we all fight while Mary Kom gives punch to her opponent. We put up our arms when she put up her arms, he continued. Because of the advancement of technology, all of us watched her match on TV. That is the vivid example of our support to her, Shri Letpao furthered.
Smt. MC Mary Kom told that inspite of her skill and practice in boxing, she would not achieve much in her carrier without people’s support. She didn’t know how she would repay, said the Champion boxer.
Advising to players, she stated that during training session for any kind of championship, she used to give 100 % concentration and practice on training. Practice regularly, dream for big achievements in your respective fields, keep discipline, have determination and gave best effort, she added.
Deputy Chief Minister, Shri Yumnam Joykumar Singh and other Cabinet Ministers, Shri Th. Biswajit Singh (Power, PWD, IPR), Shri. L. Jayantakumar Singh (Art and Culture), Shri Karam Shyam (CAF & PD), Shri. N Kayisii (Tribal & Hill Affairs), Shri. V. Hangkhalian (Veterinary and Animal Husbandry) attended the felicitation function as Guests of honour.
MLAs, officials of Youth Affairs and Sports Department, players and sports lovers also attended the programme.
It may be mentioned that Smt. MC mary Kom is the first woman boxer to achieve the feat of six times World Boxing Champion.
