Protests line up in Imphal city heart

Pothashang News Service: Imphal, January 19, 2019: Demanding withdrawal of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill passed in the Lok Sabha and opposing the bill from passing it in the Rajya Sabha groups today staged sit-in rally at different junctions of Uripok.

Uripok Laikhurembi Women’s Development Organisation secretary S. Premabati Devi said, “We are taking up this sit-in rally demanding withdrawal of the citizenship bill that was passed in the Lok Sabha. We oppose the bill to be implemented in the North East India. The President should give assent to the Manipur People (Protection) Bill, 2018.”

The protestors raised slogans “We denounce communally divisive policy of India”.

Iramdam Kanba Apunba Lup general secretary Wahengbam Luwangleima said “If the citizenship bill is passed the existing indigenous people of Manipur will be extinct. Assam has already been congested and the overflow in Assam will enter Manipur. We will be submerged. It is our duty to save the future generation of Manipur. We will participate in every movement of the people and students against the bill.”
