Municipal corporators protest against Citizenship bill

Pothashang News Service: Imphal, February 1, 2019: Corporators of Imphal Municipal Corporation (IMC) today staged sit-in rally in front the corporation’s office in Imphal in protest against the passing of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019.

Hijam Nutanchandra, corporator of Thangmeiband ward number 3 said, “Inserting a clause in the bill and implementation of Manipur People’s Bill, 2018 will not help to protect the indigenous people Manipur from the bill.”

The corporators opposed the bill demanding to withdraw the bill that was passed in the Lok Sabha and not to pass it in the Upper House.

The corporators took up the sit-in under the banner Sit-in protest against the citizenship bill, organised by corporators of IMC.

Nutanchandra said as elected members of the society we are showing solidarity to the civil society organisation, students, Meira Paibi (women activist) and people who have been protesting against the bill.

He said once the bill is passed the Manipur people’s bill will be useless and we will be in the brink of extinction.
