Pothashang News Service: Imphal, August 20, 2019: Twenty-two modified noisy exhaust motorcycle silencers were crushed using rollers by police at the premises of the Singjamei police station on Tuesday.
The silencers were demolished for violation of Supreme Courts’ order and motor vehicle Act. They were seized during drives conducted under the Singjamei Police jurisdiction since May.
The modified silencers were uninstalled and seized with the consent of the owner during the drive. Supreme Court order directs to ban such type of silencers and to fine those who are against the order. The law-breakers were fined. Such drive against using modified silencers will be continued from time to time, said police.
The drive was conducted under Section 5 of Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 which mentions that any alteration to the factory model is illegal. The Act says any changes which increase the weight of the vehicle by 10 percent can be done with the consent of the manufacturer and the regional transport office and changes to the exhaust pipes cannot be allowed as it is a violation of the Act.
On August 25 last year chairman of Manipur Pollution Control Board, L. Radhakishore had released an order to take up legal actions against the owners of these motorcycles with modified exhaust pipes.
