10 injured in police action

Pothasnang News Service: Imphal, August 22, 2019: Four police personnel, one reporter and five women protestors were injured in police action at Thangmeiband Sinam Leikai on Thursday.

The protestors were demanding justice over ‘suspicious’ death of Riamei Chungamlu, 28, wife of Kongjengbam Jackson, 33,  of Moirang Pansang Leikai, Bishnupur district. She was found death in her bedroom, hanging at the mosquito net stand of the bed using her stole on August 17 evening.

“Joint Action Committee (JAC) Against Mysterious Death of Riamei Chungamlu” alleged that she might have been murdered saying that it is highly unlikely that she could have hanged herself to death and the bed stand could not bear the weight of her body.

The protestors set off their rally from Langol Tarung community after conducting a meeting.

Police were trying to stop the rally telling the protestors that the area is under CrPC 144. When the rally reached Thangmeiband Sinam Leikai police fired tear gas shells and smoke bombs to disperse the protestors.

The injured persons were rushed to Regional Institute of Medical Sciences. As the injuries were minor they were discharged after giving first aid.

The JAC had on Wednesday submitted a memorandum to chief minister urging to hand over the case to Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Jackson has been arrested in connection with the death incident under 306 b, 304 b and 120 b IPC.

As the death is suspicious the JAC demands for fair investigation and for this the case must be handed over to CBI, said general secretary of Rongmei Naga Students’ Union (RNSU), Jeanthui Panmei. JAC has been demanding to punish the culprit and to add 302 IPC upon the arrested suspect, he added.

Later in the evening some of the members of JAC met chief minister. Jeanmei said chief minister has given assurance to take up speedy investigation and to punish the guilty. The chief minister also agreed to perform last rite of Chungamlu at her parental home (at Khoupum Duithajang, Tamenglong district), he added.

With the assurance of the chief minister the student body has revoked the indefinite economic blockade and ceasing of national and state project along NH-37 which was announced after the rally.
