Manipur Democratic Alliance demands Centre for written assurance to protect Manipur integrity

Pothashang News Service: Imphal, November 11, 2019: While people in Manipur take up demonstrations to protect Manipur’s integrity with the concluding of the peace talks between the NSCN (I-M) and the Government of India, Manipur Democratic Alliance has appealed the Union home minister Amit Shah to furnish a written assurance so that integrity of Manipur would not be affected by the peace talks result.

Manipur Democratic Alliance is a group of about 10 political parties.

It made the appeal during a press conference.

Convenor of the democratic alliance M. Tombi on Monday told reporters here that “Manipur Democratic Alliance demands and appeals to the Union home minister Amit Shah to provide a written assurance in connection with the peace talks between the NSCN (I-M) and the Government of India so as to make people free from suspicion, distrust and anxiety of breaking Manipur”.

“Naga leaders in Manipur and Nagaland are celebrating at public places and their statements indicate that the Government of India has accepted what they want. These expressions have created anxiety to the people of Manipur. In 2001 the Bangkok declaration has resulted to loss of lives of 18 people in the state. There is apprehension in the minds of the people of recurrence of similar incident,” he added.

He said the home minister assured that there is nothing in the Framework Agreement that would affect the existing Manipur territorial integrity and political administration and would not go against the wishes of the people. “Now people’s movement has been heightening as they doubt the assurance. To prevent from chaos in Manipur which has about 36 communities we are demanding a written assurance,” Tombi added.

He said the democratic alliance will also appeal the state government to demand the same.

The resolution taken by the 60 MLAs in the Manipur Assembly to safeguard Manipur integrity should not be sidelined, he said. He appealed the 60 MLAs to go to Delhi and show solidarity for the sake of the people saying that the members of Manipur Democratic Alliance with people will support the MLAs. “Let’s work together so that future generation would not blame us for if Manipur is disintegrated. It will be meaningless to do politics when Manipur is fall apart,” he added.

Manipur Democratic Alliance appealed all not to post against any community on social media.

Co-convenor of the democratic alliance, Kh. Khogendra said Government of India should respect the resolution of the Manipur Assembly and the state assembly need to take resolutions at different phases of development of the issue.
