International Day of Persons with Disabilities held

Pothashang News Service: Imphal, December 3, 2019: International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2019 was held at Iboyaima Shumang Leela Shanglen on Tuesday.

It was celebrated under the theme ‘Promoting the participation of persons with disabilities and their leadership: taking action on the 2030 Development Agenda’.

Nemcha announced that Unique Disability ID (UDID) for persons with disabilities (PwDs) project is already launched in all the 16 districts of Manipur. It is a project which is being implemented with a view of creating a National Database for PwDs, and to issue a Unique Disability Identity Card to each person with disabilities. She said this project will not only encourage transparency, efficiency and ease of delivering the government benefits to the person with disabilities, but also ensure consistency. It will also help in stream-lining the tracking of physical and financial progress of beneficiary at all levels of hierarchy of implementation i.e. from village level, block level, district level, state level and national level, she added.

Department of social welfare in collaboration with ALIMCO, Guwahati have conducted various assessment camps to identify the differently-abled people for providing various aids and appliances, she said. She called upon the attention of all concerned people, CSOs and NGOs to bring to the notice of the department who requires these aids and appliances.

Nemcha also expressed that the department is continuously striving for the welfare of the differently-abled community by implementing various welfare schemes and programmes namely Chief Minister Gi Shotharaba Singgi Tenbang, scholarship for the students, free transportation allowance, marriage incentive, amongst others.

Social welfare director Ng. Uttam Singh appealed to all the public to directly bring to the notice of the department if they come across any deserving beneficiaries.

On the occasion, hearing aids, tricycle and wheel chair were also distributed.
