Meeting re-affirms to continue movement against CAB

Pothashang News Service: Imphal, December 15, 2019: Review meeting on anti-cab movement in northeast and Manipur reaffirmed to continue the movement against Citizenship  (Amendment) Bill.

The meeting also resolved not to celebrate on implementation of inner line permit in Manipur to shoe solidarity on anti-CAB movement.

The review meeting was held on Saturday at Lamyanba Shanglen, Palace Compound, Imphal East, organised by Manipur People Against Citizenship Amendment Bill (MANPAC).

The meeting resolved to organise one day sit-in at 11.30 am on December 17 at Wall Club, Wangkhei, Imphal East.

“If the inner line permit implemented in Manipur cannot protect people of Manipur the Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019 then people will become refugees at our own land,” said co-convenor of MANPAC Amu Kamei during the review meeting.

During the recent meeting held with union home minister Amit Shah along with MANPAC representatives and MLAs of Manipur including chief minister N Biren,  MANPAC thought that Biren would raise voice for the people as representatives that no CAB will accept in Manipur. But instead of raising voice for Manipur no comment was made during the meet towards Amit Shah, he added.

State government and legal experts need to analyse Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulations, 1873 can replace citizenship amendment act or not by comparing accurate documents of both the acts. An open debate is needed among the civil bodies in order to discuss the merits and demerits of Citizenship Amendment Act, said Kamei.

People and civil bodies need to go through the merits and demerits of citizenship amendment act by collecting proper documents from Parliament despite of celebration for implementation on inner line permit system, he added.

He said people of Assam, Meghalaya and some other north eastern states are still struggling against citizenship amendment act, 2019 but in Manipur people are involving in celebrating for implementing inner line permit system. He questioned if the inner line permit system can protect people from citizenship amendment act.

The review meeting resolved to reaffirm to continue the movement of MANPAC against Citizenship Amendment Act across the north eastern states. The joint body strongly condemned the police atrocities against the protestors in Assam, Tripura and some other states of the region.

The meeting also resolved to participate and will support each movement carried out by North East Forum for Indigenous People.
