Pothashang News Service: Imphal, April 11, 2020: Amidst Covid-19 lockdown, outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) of cloven footed animal has been reported in different parts of Churachandpur district since a couple of days back.
The district veterinary officials have advised the farmers to get their animals vaccinated against FMD, a press statement released by district information officer, Churachandpur said on Saturday.
According to Lalnghaklien Hriller, joint director, district veterinary office, Churachandpur, the FMD has claimed three young sucking calves in Thingkangphai area, where, he also said 75 percent of the cattle in the area are infected by the disease.
The veterinary officials said reports of the disease were also received from the adjacent villages of Thingkangphai. Besides, there has been report about the outbreak of the disease at Ngurte, Saihenjang, Mata Villages, amongst others.
“The disease is believed to have spread throughout the district and elsewhere as it is highly contagious in nature,” said Hriller.
All farmers in the district who have not vaccinated their animals against FMD are advice to vaccinate / immunize before the animals get affected by the disease, he added.
FMD is highly contagious viral disease of cloven footed animals like cattle, buffalo, pigs, sheep, goat, dear, etc. It is caused by aphthovirus of the family Picorna Viridae which is a DNA Virus, the release said.
