Covid-19 rumor monger arrested

Imphal: Manipur Police has arrested a man from Imphal for spreading an audio falsely alarming of existence of one Covid-19 positive person in Imphal which went viral on social media on Wednesday.

The viral audio goes “…It’s 8: 25 am today. I have just heard that one Bengali residing at Paona Bazar is positive of Covid-19, so shops opened in bazar area have been shut down…”

The rumor monger has been identified as Irengbam Amu alias Amuyaima  Singh, 38, son of late I. Ranjit Singh of Thangmeiband Meisnam Leikai, originally from Singjamei Kshetri Leikai.

Imphal Police has arrested him at about 10 am.

Imphal West Police superintendent K. Meghachandra said the closure of Bazar was absolutely based on social distancing management. “The past two days proved that all our efforts to manage social distancing became futile as people don’t bother about it when all shops are opened. Now a new step will be taken up shortly to minimize the crowd. Till then it’s closed to implement Covid-19 protocols,” he added.
