Manipur witnesses decline in road accident fatalities

Imphal, June 2: Fatalities caused by road accidents during the period of January to March this year declined by 2.33 percent in the state as compared to the same quarter of the previous year.

According to State Transport Department, the number of fatalities caused by road accidents during January to March, 2020 was 42 while the number of fatalities during January to March, 2019 was 43.

​The number of road accidents recorded during the 1st quarter of 2020 (January – March, 2020) was 174 as compared to 169 road accidents during the period in the previous year showing an increase in number of road accidents in the state by 2.96 percent.

During the quarter in 2020, the number of injuries caused by road accidents also rose by 14.4 percent i.e. 286 injuries including 83 grievous and 203 minor injuries during January – March, 2020 compared to 250 including 57 grievous and 193 minor injuries during the same period in 2019.

During the 1st quarter of 2020, even if the number of road accidents had increased, the number of fatalities had actually decreased compared to the same quarter of 2019, a DIPR press release said.
