Manipur titular king becomes Rajya Sabha MP

Imphal: Manipur’s titular king Maharaja Sanajaoba Leishemba has been elected as Rajya Sabha MP on Friday.

BJP sponsored candidate Leishemba beat his Congress rival Tongbram Mangibabu Singh by four votes. He got 28 votes while Mangibabu got 24 votes.

The election was held at Manipur Legislative Assembly.

Returning officer M. Ramani Devi in an official order said she have examined the complaint submitted by agents of Indian National Congress (INC) at about 3.45 pm, regarding alleged violation of secrecy of voting by Y. Khemchand Singh (BJP) and Ngamthang Haokip (INC).

She said she was present during the poll process and have reconfirmed the allegation through the video recording of the poll process.

“I am convinced that there is no violation of secrecy and that the complaint is baseless. The complaint therefore stands disposed, ” she added.

“God has given me the opportunity to take up distinct works for the people, which I could not take up in the past 25 years of serving the people of Manipur” Leishemba said.

Chief minister Nongthombam Biren Singh said, “The Rajya Sabha election was conducted amid Covid-19 crisis as it is essential.”

He thanked the MLAs who supported the titular and also thanked all the opposition members of the House for peaceful participation in the election.
