Huge contraband drug recovered amid Covid-19 menace

Imphal : A team of Moreh Battalion under the aegis of HQ IGAR (South) on Wednesday apprehended an individual with huge quantity of contraband items moving along the jungle track from Moreh bypassing Khudengthabi.

On seeing the security forces, the individual tried to escape taking advantage of the thick vegetation, however could not succeed. On frisking, 500 small packets containing approx 1 lakh WIY tablets worth crores were recovered, Assam Rifles said in a press release.

Moreh Battalion has been at the forefront of putting a check on smuggling along the porous Indo-Myanmar Border during the Covid-19 menace.

The contrabands were being transported from Myanmar to Imphal. The individual was identified as Minthang Mate son of Letzang Mate, 33,  resident of Lhangnomveng village, , Moreh Ward No 9, Tengnoupal district, the release said.

Due to the lockdown, the movement of contraband items have increased along the Imphal- Moreh axis. This is the third such recovery by Moreh Battalion within a span of one week on the jungle track near Moreh.

The apprehended individual along with the recovered items have been handed over to Moreh Police station, it added.
