‘Illegal’ timber seized

Imphal: Troops of Assam Rifles  seized ‘illegally’ transported timbers hidden beneath fire woods in three trucks at Lambui  (Shakpao).

Assam Rifles in a press release on Saturday said in continuing with its efforts to curb illegal trade in Ukhrul and Kamjong districts, the troops under the aegis of HQ IGAR (South), are keeping a strict vigil on nefarious activities.

On Saturday, based on reliable inputs regarding movment of illegal timber, a MVCP was established at Lambui  (Shakpao) in the morning.  At about 6 pm during routine checking of vehicles, two trucks carrying Pinewood and one truck carrying, likely Tun Wood of foreign origin were stopped for checking, it said.

It was found that the trucks were carrying illegal timber hidden behind firewood which was loaded on top of timber. All three trucks were well camouflaged with fire wood from all sides in order to slip  through check points and illegally being transported to Imphal. No  Permit were held by the trucks to carry the same, it added.

On initial questioning of the drivers, it was revealed that two of the trucks bearing registration number MN 01 8729 and MN 01 AA 1839 were coming from Ukhrul and one truck with registration number MN 05 3905 was coming from Kamjong. DFO Ukhrul and the Forest beat Officer at Litan were informed of the same and the trucks were held in custody till handing over to the Forest Beat officer on Thursday. The trucks along with the drivers  and co-drivers were handed over and the timber worth lakhs, the release said.
