Imphal: Troops of Assam Rifles under the aegis of HQ IGAR (South) recovered foreign cigarettes and betel nuts from Choktong-Rilram Centre road in Tengnoupal District on Wednesday.
The contraband items were recovered when troops of Assam Rifles established a Mobile Vehicle Check Post on Choktong-Rilram Centre road.
Three Kenbo bikes carrying cartons travelling towards Rilram Centre was noticed. On seeing the security forces, the individuals dropped the cartons and fled into the jungle. On pursuing them, troops found more cartons hidden inside the jungle. On carrying out a thorough search of the area, 40 cartons of foreign cigarettes worth Rs. 60 lakhs and 55 kg of betel nuts worth Rs. 1.32 lakhs were found hidden in the jungles, Assam Rifles said.
The recovered items have been handed over to Custom Office, Pallel for further investigations, it added.
