Imphal: Luwangshangbam Apunba Meira Paibi Lup, a women organisation on Tuesday burned down large quantity of products which were allegedly belonged to an MLA.
A group of women, during their morning walk, found unloading of goods from a truck which were escorted by a team who were allegedly dressed in IRB uniform at around 5:30 pm. The escort team moved away when the women folk asked to stop, a lady said.
Suspicious of the goods to be anti-social items, a group of members of the women organisation rushed to the residence of Purnima Devi, 62, w/o (L) L. Birchandra at Luwangshangbam Mamang Leikai where the packed goods were unloaded.
They found the consignments containing different tobacco items and seized immediately. The items were loaded to two tractor trailers and a Tata DI truck and taken to Luwangshangbam Maning Ching, a hill site. The tobacco products were burnt to ashes.
The local women activists alleged that the tobacco items belonged to MLA, who they failed to identify.
The items would worth more than Rs. 4 crore, the women group said. Trading intoxicating items during COVID-19 lockdown utilising MLA/minister’s escort is against the “War on Drug” of Manipur government, the organisation members said.
