Imphal: For the first time a 20-year old Covid-19 positive woman from Thoubal district’s Lilong has given birth to a baby girl at Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) on Monday at around 2:30 am.
It was the first baby born to the mother, Reshma, wife of Abas Khan. The baby weighs 3.25 kg.
“Both mother and daughter are healthy. They are under observation and they will be shifted to Covid ward soon,” said head of department of Gynaecology, RIMS, Dr Ranjit Singh.
He said she was reported at RIMS emergency ward on Sunday at 4:48 pm. The expected date of delivery was just two days short, he added.
Before she came to the hospital she was tested for Covid-19 with rapid antigen test at Lilong Primary Health Centre. The test was taken on the previous day. She was negative for the contagion in the report, the doctor said.
According to the SOP of RIMS, the patient and her care taker have to undergo rapid antigen test. The patient was found positive of Covid-19. She was treated as Covid patient. She does not have symptoms of the disease like breathing difficulty, thought pain and fever, he added.
“We take utmost care for the patient,” he said. When consulted the paediatric doctor it was told that the baby is healthy and also suggested that the mother can breastfeed the baby.
The baby has not been tested for Covid-19.
“The Gynaecology emergency department has been working round the clock during the Covid-19 crisis. We do not differentiate the patients by class or religion,” Dr Ranjit said.
There has been an allegation that a 20-year old pregnant woman from Noney district died along with her unborn baby on Thursday morning in Imphal as five hospitals including JNIMS and RIMS refused admission for delivery.
Chief minister N. Biren Singh had instructed that all government and private hospitals should attend all patients. “Any violation will be viewed very severely and action will be taken under the Disaster Management Act, 2005 and Manipur Nursing Home and Clinical Registration Act, 1992, etc.,” he said on his Facebook post. He said an enquiry committee has been constituted to look into the unfortunate incident leading to her death.
To ensure that there is no denial of service a ‘round the clock’ toll free helpline number has been established via the State Health Agency, where in any person denied treatment by a hospital can be immediately call on 1800-103-2015, said a notification by the state health department on Friday. It said a mobile team has been activated by the directorate of health services to follow up with hospitals in Imphal area during night hours.
