Sports minister Rijiju hints for assistance to family of departed footballer Manitombi

Imphal: Minister of state for youth affairs and sports Kiren Rijiju on the demise of former India international footballer from Manipur Laishram Manitombi twitted, “I am saddened to hear of the untimely demise of footballer Manitombi Singh. We are trying to work out some emergency funds from the Sports Ministry to support the family in these trying times. The government is committed to support all athletes, present and past.”

Manitombi passed away in Imphal after long illness on Sunday. He is survived by parents, wife and an 8-year old son.

He was born on June 10, 1981 at Achanbegei. He started his career at Army Boys and also played Services at the beginning of his career.

Manitombi played for India in the 2002 LG Cup in Vietnam. He was also part of the India squad in the 2002 Busan Asian Games. He played for Air India, Mohun Bagan and Salgaocar FC.

Chief minister N. Biren Singh on his Facebook post said, “Deeply saddened by the untimely demise of former India International footballer Laishram Manitombi Singh, who happens to be from my Assembly Constituency and known to me since his childhood days. His absence will remain a huge void in Indian football. May his soul rest in peace in the Heavenly abode. I also share the grief of the bereaved family.”
