Manipur Chief Minister’s Police Medal for Gallantry to cop Debson withdrawn

Imphal: Manipur government has withdrawn and cancelled the award of Manipur Chief Minister’s Police Medal for Gallantry to Bheishamayum Debson Singh, sub-inspector of Imphal East Police commando after All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU) pointed out that the cop was arrested for trafficking drugs worth more than Rs 3 crore in 2013.

The government expressed thankfulness to AMSU for bringing the incident to the notice of the government.

The state home department in a press statement released on Sunday evening said considering the seriousness of the matter, government acted promptly.

 “Government has withdrawn and cancelled the award of Manipur Chief Minister’s Police Medal for Gallantry to Bheishamayum Debson Singh, date based on preliminary enquiry and finding the allegation to be true,” it said

An enquiry into the matter has been instituted by a committee headed by IGP (intelligence) K. Radhashyam Singh to find out more details.

Inspector, E. Roshan Singh, Reader to Imphal East superintendent of police who was found responsible for lapses in the initial processing has been placed under suspension, it added.

Debson has also been suspended for concealing the drug case pending against him.

Director General of Police L.M. Khaute issued an order which directs the enquiry committee to carry out fresh verification of antecedents and past records of all the recipients of Chief Minister’s Medal on the occasion of Independence Day, 2020. The committee has to submit its report to the police chief within one week ‘without fail’.

The student body pointed out that on April 28, 2013 sub-inspector Debson of Singjamei Bheigyabati Leikai, Imphal East was arrested along with an 11-member team of the Manipur Police commando at Pallel on the way to Moreh carrying Respifed tablets and pseudoephedrine tablets worth Rs 3,64,02,000 in international market. An FIR number 62(4)2013 Kakching police station under section 21/29 of the ND&PS Act and 27 Arms Act was lodged.

It said the same cop was listed in serial number 6 of the Chief Minister’s Police Medal for Gallantry notified on August 12.
