Imphal: Konsam Romesh, a 26 years old boy from Awang Jiri Maning Leikai of Imphal West has produced mobile phone tripod as his latest venture in Bamboo crafts.
This adjustable bamboo made tripod has the features of being a mobile phone camera capture stand. One can witness the functioning of the bamboo tripod through the video linked with this Pothashang report.
So far Romesh has produced bamboo pen, table lamp and bamboo chair besides producing decorative items replicating bullock cart, Kangla Gate, Manipur University gate, Meitei Yumjao (traditional house) and Taj Mahal among others.
He is a recipient of the state’s Merit Award to Outstanding Crafts-person for 2019-20. He was awarded a sum of Rs 50, 000 on the sixth National Handloom Day.
Romesh, who stopped to pursue for further education after passing Class XII, says he loves bamboo craft making since his childhood. He said he has the vision to continue practicing his art of making bamboo crafts.
He said he started practicing the craft as his hobby. Seeing his post displaying his products on social media he started getting orders for his products from different parts of the state as well as from other parts of the country.
“I am supplying the products as much as I can,” he said.
Romesh started taking up the trade as his profession since two years back. He said the products produced out of hobby can be commercialised and takes up the trade as profession if there is demand for the product in the market.
“I feel that the talented youth of the state in different trade need to expose their talents taking the opportunity of this advanced social media so that he or she could get the opportunity for the skill,” Romesh told Pothashang.
“If we endeavour together we can make Manipur an advancing state by marketing our products outside the state. We need to produce what the people from outside the state demands,” he said giving a message to his fellow youth in the state.
One will become successful if he or she exercises his or her skill with a work culture, he said.
The main demands from outside the state for his craft are the Bamboo made Taj Mahal and ships. There were orders for bamboo pens too from outside the state. Marketing has been failed due to the current lockdown, he added. He hopes that people will keep demanding for his products from outside the state.
“Lockdown is a boon to me. It gives me the opportunity to stay home and continue with my crafts work,” he said.
“I was very happy that the state has recognized me by giving me the state merit award. Till today I have not applied for financial assistance to the state government to expand my profession. I will apply for StartUp Manipur when the time is ripe,” he said.
