Imphal: Manipur Police on Tuesday had a meeting with the chiefs of 16 villages in connection with ‘illicit’ poppy cultivation at Manipur Police Headquarters.
The meeting was chaired by DGP L.M. Khaute and attended by other senior police officers– Ashutosh Kumar Sinha, ADGP (Int.), Lunsieh Kipgen, IGP, Zone- III, K. Radhashyam Singh, IGP, K. Kabib, DIG Range – III, H. Jogeshchandra Singh, SP Imphal East, Hemant Pandey, SP IPS, Kangpokpi and W. Basu Singh, MPS, SP, Narcotics and Affairs of Border.
In the said meeting, an extensive interaction with the village chiefs was done, chief minister N. Biren Singh said on his Facebook post.
Manipur Police department has appealed to the village chiefs not to cultivate illicit poppy nor ganja plants and co-operate them in the drive against drug plants cultivation for making our state a drug free state, he said.
The state police officers shared penal provision under ND&PS Act for involvement in such activities. In the session, the village chiefs also shared their grievances and they strongly requested for alternative means of livelihood and developmental works in their villages.
In this regard, the officers informed them to furnish details of alternatives means of livelihood of their respective villages through concerned superintendent of police.
Such meeting will continue till the police interact with all the village chiefs where poppy and ganja are cultivated. Another such meeting will be held on Thursday at the same venue, the chief minister’s post mentioned.
