Imphal: Chief minister N. Biren Singh led others in paying floral tributes to the statue of Hijam Irawat/Irabotat at Irawat Square, Lilashing Khongnangkhong, Thangmeiband, Imphal on Thursday.
Deputy chief minister Y. Joykumar, Cabinet ministers, MLAs, chief secretary, DGP and various high ranking officials also offered their tribute to Jana Neta Irawat.
“We should not forget the contribution of the great leader who selflessly dedicated his life for the welfare of the society. Let us follow his ideals, thoughts and work towards inclusive development in the state,” Biren said.
The 124th Birth Anniversary of Hijam Irawat (Irawat Day) was celebrated across the state and various parts of the NorthEast India by different organisations.
Irawat (September 30, 1896 – September 26, 1951), also known as Jana Neta Hijam Irabot, was a politician and revolutionary social activist from Manipur. He fought against the social evils of the society. He later was jailed for supporting the 1939 Nupi Lan. In the 1948 election to the Manipur Assembly, Irabot won from the Utlou Constituency.
