We are closely looking into the role of our neighbouring countries with regards to issue of drugs in Manipur: Biren

Imphal: “What’s going on in our state? Is this an act of proxy war from our neighbouring countries? We are closely looking into the role of our neighbouring countries with regards to issue of drugs in Manipur. It’s time we to wake up and counter this at the earliest,” Manipur chief minister N. Biren Singh said.

Biren made the remark on Monday following arrest of a youth from Imphal West in connection with poppy plantation.

During the special drive against illicit poppy cultivation, combined teams of Churachandpur District Police, NAB, District Forest Officials and District Administration destroyed 20 acres of illicit Poppy cultivation in the Lanva upstream/ Teiseng area in Churachandpur District on November 20, which was widely appreciated by the general public in view of the prevalent rampant drug abuse in the state of Manipur.

However, defying logic one Lun Haokip posted in his Facebook account on the next day, a message calling for violence against the police teams at the hands of UG Groups. He had even claimed that he would provide money and ration for people volunteering to attack police teams to protect illicit poppy fields, which is not only outrageous but is also a criminal offence having the potential to mislead the common public into illegal poppy cultivation a serious offence under the NDPS Act.

“While the state government is giving their best efforts in this fight against the drug cartels, it is very disturbing to learn about some individuals trying to incite violence against police teams who are on duty to destroy the poppy fields…. He has been arrested from his residence in Langol” te chief minister said.

Police department says a criminal case has been taken up by Churachandpur District Police on Sunday. District police identified the details of the Facebook account holder as Thangpinlun Haokip, 28, son of Sonpao Haokip of Langol, Imphal West. The person was arrested from his residence and further investigation is underway.

The police department ‘sincerely’ appeals to the general public to fully support and co-operate with the government’s initiatives in the ongoing fight against drugs in the state and isolate those vested interests who through social media spread or propagate misinformation, including propaganda that may affect harmony among different communities in the state.

“Serious legal action will be taken against whosoever misuses the social media to serve his or her vested interest,” the department cautions.
