Imphal: Three Manipur girl athletes set off their Imphal-Delhi cycle expedition on the theme “Stop Crime against Women and Child Labour”.

The athletes were Mathurabashimayum Bindiya Devi, 22, from Sagolband Moirang Hanuba Leirak, Imphal West, Sinam Roshni Devi, 17, from Kakching and Chakpram Naocha Chanu, 17 from Heikak Mapal Makha Leikai, Imphal East.

The group ride is a self-financed initiative, which is a first such cycle expedition undertaken by the three young athletes

The bicycle expedition was set off at Khuman Lampak sports complex, here on Wednesday. It was flaged off by Junreiwon Thongam, wife of works minister, Thongam Biswajit and renowned Manipuri female film actor Biju Ningombam.

“The expedition was organised to promote women safety and to stop the rising cases of crime against women and child labour in the state in particular and in the country in general,” Bindiya said.

The expedition will cover at least 2,500 km on road and will cross Nagaland, Assam, West Bengal, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh to reach their destination in Delhi.

In two consecutive years, Naocha has won a gold medal at the East Zone Junior Athletic Championship which was held in Bihar (2018) and Jharkhand (2019) in 3,000 metres race walk. Bindiya and Roshni are training for sprinter 100 and 200 meters and long-distance running 3,000 meters, respectively.

About 25 motor bikers of Samadon Ayangba, a riders group, took on the road from Imphal to see off the girls at Mao gate.
