MP Leishemba Sanajaoba demands inclusion of Manipuri script in Indian currency notes

Imphal: Maharaj Leishemba Sanajaoba has put up in Rajya Sabha for inclusion Manipuri language script (Meetei/Meitei Mayek) in the Indian Currency notes.

Leishemba put up the demand in the zero hour of Parliament Budget Session.

He said Manipuri Language means Meeteilol was included in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution on August 20, 1992 along with other languages like Konkani and Nepali. Accordingly, Konkani and Nepali were already included in Indian currency notes.

“Now Manipuri is being taught upto MA 1st Semester in the Manipuri Script (Meetei Mayek). I therefore request the government through this august House to Include Manipuri Language in Manipuri script in Indian currency notes which is the wish and long cherished dream of our Manipuri People and Hon’ble Chief Minister of Manipur Shri N. Biren Singh..,” he said.

Manipuri indigenous script was included in school syllabus in 2006.
