4-member SIT to prove grenade attack on Media: Biren

Imphal: A four member Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by Superintendent of Police, Imphal West has been constituted to probe into the grenade attack at the office of local vernacular daily newspaper Poknapham and its sister publication The People’s Chronicle at Keishampat on February 13.

Chief minister N. Biren Singh said this on the House floor on the ninth day of the ongoing 12th session of the 11th Manipur Legislative Assembly on Tuesday.

Biren, who is in-charge of home department, gave the statement in reply to a calling attention raised by MLA Kh. Joykishan Singh.

Strongly condemning the ‘cowardly’ attacks upon the media, the fourth pillar of democracy, Biren gave assurance to nab the culprits involved in the incident at the earliest and informed that FIR has been already lodged regarding this incident.

He said steps have been taken up by the government to deploy security personnel at the office of media houses.

Biren fervently appealed to all the media houses and all the media professionals in the state to resume its service in public interest as media plays an important role in dissemination of important news and information to the general public at all times.

It’s the third day news publications has been stopped as media persons cease their duty demanding the assailant for clarification and demanding the government to book the attacker.

Media fraternity in the state took up sit-in rally demanding the same.
