Seminar on “Treaty prohibiting nuclear weapons” held

Imphal: To mark triumph of international campaign on prohibiting nuclear weapons the Indian Doctors for Peace and Development (IDPD) Manipur state branch organised as seminar on “Treaty prohibiting nuclear weapons”, a landmark event in history to abolish nuclear weapons at Babina Diagnostics, Imphal on Saturday.

IDPD is an affiliate to International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW), which is a non-partisan federation of national medical groups in 63 countries, representing doctors, medical students, other health workers, and concerned people who share the common goal of creating a more peaceful and secure world free from the threat of nuclear annihilation.

IPPNW, established in 1980, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1985. It adopts International Campaign to abolish nuclear weapon (ICAN).
“More than 480 organisations have joined the campaign…now we got the Nobel Peace Prize twice,” IDPD Manipur State Branch president M. Nara told reporters.

During the Covid pandemic outbreak the United Nations Organisation recognises the demand and took a resolution to abolish nuclear weapons. However the resolution can become an international Law once done it is ratified by at least 50 countries. On October 24 (UNO Day), Honduras made its ratification as 51st country. Now it becomes a Law. To mark this success this seminar is organised as an intellectual exercise and to let people know about it, Nara said.
