Manipur bars opening camps for Myanmar refugees

Imphal: Manipur state home department had instructed deputy commissioners of districts bordering Myanmar to prohibit opening of any camps to provide shelter to Myanmar nationals who enter the state.

As a fall out of the events taking place in the neighbouring country, Myanmar, it is reported that the country, nationals have been trying to enter India through the border states including Manipur, Special Secretary, home, H. Gyan Prakash said asking the deputy commissioners of Chandel, Tengnoupal, Kamjong, Ukhrul and Churachandpur to prohibit opening of camps.

In the official letter the home department said district administration should not open any camps to provide food and shelter and the civil society organisations should not be allowed to open any camps for the refugees.

In case of grievous injuries, medical attention may be provided on humanitarian considerations, it said.

People trying to enter and seek refuge should be politely turned away. Aadhar enrolment should be stopped Immediately and Aadhar enrolment kits be taken into safe custody, it added.

The home department directed the deputy commissioners to submit action taken report of the instructions made on March 26.

The development came amid the Myanmar military crackdown on protesters. Myanmar’s Ambassador to the United Nations appealed to the Indian government and various state governments to provide shelter to refugees.
