Assam Rifles foils timber smuggling


Imphal: ​Shangshak Battalion of 10 Sector Assam Rifles under aegis of IGAR (South) foiled an attempt of timber smuggling in Phalang-Shangshak on Tuesday.

​In a routine search operation, the troops recovered a large quantity of timber and apprehended three smugglers on NH 102 A road axis.

​Acting on specific information regarding smuggling of timber from Phalang to Imphal, an operation was launched to intercept the vehicle carrying illegal timber. At around 09:30 PM, the team intercepted one vehicle. On thorough checking illegal timber, worth Rs. 96 lakh was recovered, the Assam Rifles said.

The timber along with smugglers and vehicle have been handed over to district forest officer, Ukhrul for further legal action, it added.
